Hala na zboże czy silos? Co wybrać?

Choosing the right way to store grain is a key decision for every farmer and agri-food entrepreneur. The two most commonly considered solutions are storage tents and grain silos. Both systems have their strengths, so making the right investment decision requires a thorough understanding of the farm's needs and the options available.

Tent halls for grain - flexibility that pays off

Storage tent halls are lightweight yet robust structures made of galvanised steel and covered with high-quality PVC fabric in 750 or 900 g/m². Thanks to their modular design, they can be easily adapted to different applications and can be quickly assembled or relocated. This solution is ideal for farms looking for a versatile storage space for grain and other agricultural materials.

Key advantages of storage tents:

  • quick erection and dismantling - tent halls are ready for use even within a few days, allowing you to react quickly to changing storage needs,
  • possibility of erection without permit - in many cases no building permit is required, which simplifies the formalities,
  • versatility of use - in addition to grain, they can store fertilisers, fodder, agricultural machinery or even serve as a space for sorting crops,
  • mobility - the halls can be easily dismantled and moved to a new location,
  • different roof variants - models with arched or pitched roofs are available for better drainage of water and snow.

Storage tent halls provide protection against precipitation, wind and UV radiation. Thanks to the high side walls, it is also possible to store grain on pallets or in big bags in an orderly and efficient manner.

Challenges to bear in mind:

  • the ground for the hall needs to be prepared - ideally it should be paved and level,
  • limited thermal insulation - especially in extreme weather conditions this can affect grain quality.

Grain silo - the solution for large warehouses

Grain silos are classic vertical structures designed for the long-term storage of large quantities of grain. They are primarily used on large farms and processing plants that need a durable and professional storage system.

Advantages of silos:

  • excellent protection of the raw material - silos provide a very airtight storage environment that effectively protects the grain from moisture, fungi, insects and rodents,
  • automation - modern silos can be integrated with advanced technologies: humidity and temperature sensors, screw or bucket conveyors and aeration systems,
  • long-term - a silo is an investment that pays for itself over decades. A properly designed and maintained structure can last up to 30-40 years without major upgrades.

Limitations of silos:

  • high construction and maintenance costs - an investment in a grain silo is a major financial undertaking. In addition to the cost of the silo itself, there are expenses associated with preparing the foundations, installing technical systems and subsequent maintenance. For smaller farms, this can be a barrier difficult to jump over,
  • lack of mobility - silos are completely stationary structures. Once installed, they cannot be moved and changing location requires building from scratch,
  • require planning permission - due to their size and durability, silos must be notified to the relevant authorities and be subject to a planning permission procedure.

When is a storage tent and when is a silo? Practical tips for farms

The choice between a storage tent and a grain silo is not always obvious - both solutions have their advantages, but respond to different needs and operating models. It is worth taking into account both the scale of production and the nature of the farm, the expectations of storage, the availability of funds and the planned duration of use.

A storage tent will be the best solution if your farm:

  • needs a quick and economical solution for seasonal storage. When the harvest season is approaching and storage needs to be erected immediately, storage tents offer a huge time advantage - they are delivered and erected in just a few days.
  • wants to avoid building formalities. When using storage tents for up to 180 days, a mere declaration is sufficient. This means less bureaucracy, a quicker start and no costs for building plans or permits.
  • seeks versatility. Tent halls can be used not only for grain storage, but also for machinery, fertiliser, feed or even as a temporary workspace. It is a flexible structure that can be enlarged, dismantled or relocated over time.

A grain silo, on the other hand, will be a better choice if:

  • You have a large sowing area and plan to harvest many tonnes. Silos are designed for really large volumes and are ideal where high capacity and systematic storage throughout the year is important.
  • You need full control of the internal conditions. Modern silos can be equipped with temperature and humidity sensors, aeration and ventilation systems, automatic loading and unloading systems. This is a solution created with quality and precision in mind.
  • Grain is to be stored for the long term - for many months or even years. The silo protects the raw material from degradation and, thanks to its robust, durable construction, you can be sure that the grain will remain in perfect condition throughout the entire storage period.

Bottom line - hall or silo? The choice depends on your specific needs

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for all farms. Both storage tents and grain silos have their place in modern agriculture - but they differ in purpose, functionality and level of investment.

If flexibility, fast implementation and adaptability to different applications are key - the storage tent is the right choice. It is suitable not only for the seasonal storage of cereals, but also for storing machinery, fertilisers or as a back-up for agricultural operations.

A silo, on the other hand, is the solution for large-scale farms that need full control over the quality of their stored grain for many months or even years. Although it involves higher costs and a longer investment process, it provides the highest level of security for the raw material.
